What inspired us to create Zybic Enterprise?
During various Management Consulting engagements, Zybic recognized that costs associated with Value Added Variance were not being adequately addressed.
In fact, industry experts now estimate average losses at well over $5000 per employee, annually. IDC also expects this solution sector to grow to $4.6 billion in 2006, up from $1.1 billion in 2001.*
Over time, Zybic developed, tested and refined new approaches that simply uncovered and captured this lost revenue for their clients.
Soon it was apparent that these technologies and techniques could be widely applied. So the company invested in the creation of a generalized and widely applicable software manifestation of this research. It is called Zybic Enterprise (ZE) - a unique software product quickly becoming as useful and ubiquitous as the spreadsheet.
Zybic offers a full spectrum of products and services focused on improving the way we all do business.
What is Zybic Enterprise? What can it do for me?
Zybic Enterprise is a unique and flexible on-line application. A Structured Key Information Enterprise Repository (SKIER) that delivers key information in a form that is simple to digest and utilize - to people when and where they need it. (More)
It is squarely aimed at addressing the Value Added Cost Variance problem that all organizations face. Thanks to its unique approach and design, it provides the capability to reduce and manage the entropy that builds naturally within most layers of every organization.
Think of ZE as a window that enables people to correctly visualize and interpret the enterprise. Organizing, managing, exploring or auditing organizational units and understanding their value to the business is now a profitable exercise.
ZE widely promotes the coordinated management of intellectual assets that enables every user to leverage future value while maximizing their current operational effectiveness. This helps everyone efficiently deal with the minutia and complexities that otherwise suffocate efficiency and stifle progress within each organization.
Specifically, this tool allows each user / department / company / enterprise to become more competitive by:
- Reducing waste
- Significantly shortening learning curves
- Exposing workflow gaps and/or inefficiencies
- Routinely packaging prior effort for future use
- Standardizing / simplifying the operational lexicon
Is Zybic Enterprise an enterprise portal? How does it fit in with my corporate portal strategy?
No. ZE is not meant to replace or compete with your existing enterprise portal solution. ZE is a self contained, database-driven web application that houses information about your enterprise. It does not attempt to aggregate existing corporate data that exists in various forms throughout your company. However, you can define dynamic hyperlinks to external data sources such as existing portal pages or other corporate documents from within ZE documents (and vice versa). This allows for a simple and effective integration strategy. Zybic Enterprise will work side by side with your existing portal and provide added value to your enterprise users.
How would you classify Zybic Enterprise as a product? Is it a modeling tool, workflow tool, web authoring tool?
Zybic Enterprise contains elements of all these types of products but does not fall into any of these categories. ZE models your enterprise in a “hyperlinked information base”. As such, it documents corporate meta-data like process, procedure, rule, fact, etc. It contains a set of tools (e.g. HTML editor, information filters) to capture information in a narrative format. Entities and relationships are maintained in an object-oriented model stored in a persistent database that provides search capabilities. In addition, ZE entities can be classified into an “information hierarchy” or “taxonomy”. This allows enterprise content to be searched across various dimensions. Data mining becomes easy by navigating the enterprise taxonomy tree.
Is Zybic Enterprise considered "knowledgeware"? How does ZE compare against other commercial "knowledge base" products in the market?
We do not classify ZE as a "knowledge base" product. Zybic believes strongly that the term "Knowledge base" is a misnomer in the sense that knowledge can only really reside in the human mind. We believe that "data" imparts value when it becomes "structured and navigable information" that is consumable by the human mind. Once information is consumable, it can be instantiated in the mind as knowledge. We use the term "information base" loosely to differentiate from "database" and "knowledge base". Zybic Enterprise is implemented on top of a database, but the model that surfaces "information" is what provides real value. This model is Object-Oriented and is navigable via a type system as well as a user-defined taxonomy.
Zybic Enterprise seems to capture workflow definitions. I already have a workflow tool in my organization that allows me to define workflow solutions. Why do I need ZE?
Chances are your tool is designed and implemented to directly support a “priesthood’ of elite enterprise process modelers, not the general employee population.
It is our experience that most employees do not have ad-hoc access to tools that allow them to clearly ‘see the big picture’, let alone understand their place in it. Until ZE, workflow definition and access was limited to a cadre of enterprise process modelers. Periodically collected and packaged, information was not widely disseminated. It was very unusual for ordinary employees to have direct access to this information even though it was often coupled to their own efforts, as well as those of other organizations with which they collaborated.
On the rare occasion when detailed workflow diagrams were published for the general population, what chance did the common nontechnical employee have when attempting to comprehend and correctly interpret such cryptic workflow presentations? None.
Zybic Enterprise addresses these problems. Workflow processes (as well as other business entity types) are declared in a natural, readable narrative that is easily accessed and understood by any employee with a need and a web browser. There are no experts controlling access or limiting understanding through the use of unnecessary jargon. With ZE, information can be effectively digested each and every day by the diverse employee population.
Who should use this tool? My web developers? Portal content authors?
Neither- ZE was developed for the average corporate user as well as the executive. This means any user across the enterprise should be able to edit content and view information about the enterprise. Security rules enforce who has the ability to update content. Security is also based on organizational structure so users will be allowed to view corporate information according to established departmental rules.
The ‘Enterprise’ part of the Zybic Enterprise name troubles me because I just need it for one department. Can it be implemented in a small department or does it have to be applied company wide to be effective?
Don’t be concerned. The Zybic Enterprise design is based on a ‘Bottom-Up’ paradigm. So it can be effectively applied and positively impact a single department.
I see that Zybic Enterprise is supposed to be a resource for all employees, clients and so on. How do we keep our information secure?
ZE is focused on getting the right information to the right people whenever and wherever they need it. However, it blocks any other access. To facilitate this, ZE is implemented with industry standard security measures such as ‘User Permission’ attributes that dynamically adjust the content delivered to the logged-in user. These measures promote simple and secure access while preventing unauthorized viewing.
Say we implement. How do we do it?
It’s simple! In fact, many people learn how just by using it. Typically organizations will implement ZE as follows:
- A small implementation team (usually one or two individuals) is sanctioned.
- This ‘team’ often first selects their own organization or some other improvement opportunity.
- They experiment, learn, execute, audit and report results.
- Some enthusiastic users may join the team.
- Additional organizational opportunities are targeted.
- ZE is promoted through demonstrated successes.
It is important to note that the teams do not ‘own’ the implementation. The users do. So consider the implementation team members to be trainers who move on to other things once ZE is diffused within each organization. As soon as the user community transitions to ZE they are the primary implementers /administrators / beneficiaries.
What database system does Zybic Enterprise support?
Zybic Enterprise supports any standard relational database that implements an ODBC interface. “Out-of-the-box” ZE supports Microsoft Access for running sample applications and tutorials. Connectors will be available for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase and MySQL.
What platforms does Zybic Enterprise run on?
ZE is implemented on the Java platform and will run on Windows NT/2000/XP, Linux, and UNIX platforms.
I’m afraid of locking my data into a proprietary tool. How is content stored in Zybic Enterprise? Can I import/export data?
The implementation of ZE is very open. It stores all content in XML using a standard relational database. This means that content can be exported as XML and/or HTML. Likewise, content can be imported directly into the database from external data sources or copy/pasted into the content editors.
Zybic Enterprise looks simple in concept...
ZE looks simple on the outside- it is meant to be easy to use. It is also highly generic and customizable. This means that ZE is not just a collection of hyperlinked static web pages. Zybic Enterprise provides the infrastructure to edit, categorize, store and search information in a concise way. This infrastructure provides added value and enables you to build an “enterprise information base” easily and quickly.
What are the desktop installation requirements for Zybic Enterprise? Will I need to do software installs across my entire enterprise?
ZE is a web-based application that is implemented using only HTML and JavaScript on the client. No ActiveX or Java applets are required to be downloaded onto the local desktop.
What web browsers do you support?
Currently, ZE requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or above.
Is Zybic Enterprise customizable? Can I change the look and feel to make it “fit in” with my corporate image and existing intranet and portal pages?
Yes- Zybic Enterprise supports the notion of “skins”, in that the user interface can be customized to a particular style. A default skin is provided out-of-the-box along with several alternative sample skins.
How will Zybic Enterprise work with my existing employee database? I don’t want to reenter all my employee information into ZE. How do I keep Zybic Enterprise synchronized with my employee database over time?
ZE provides application interfaces to integrate with existing enterprise systems. For instance, ZE can provide the ability to automatically import employee data. Using the connector toolkit, you will be able to periodically refresh external data that was originally sourced from outside Zybic Enterprise
Can we link or somehow integrate Zybic Enterprise with our systems?
Yes. Remember ZE is web centric and can link to any internal or external content or system.
Is Zybic Enterprise a document repository or document management system?
Neither - Zybic Enterprise allows "entities" or "objects" authored in the ZE editors to be defined in a document-like format and stored in the ZE repository. All objects are stored as XML content in the repository. However, ZE objects may include hyperlinks to external documents in the enterprise in order to call them up on demand. Likewise, hyperlinks to external HTML pages residing on a portal or intranet can be defined within Zybic Enterprise objects as well.
Why should I consider your products or services?
We always make a determined effort to earn our client’s trust. Our staff is mature, experienced and adapts quickly to the requirements of most corporate cultures. Our mission is to help them reduce the waste and trauma associated with every instance of value adding that they are responsible for.
Further, remember that our products and services are more like spreadsheets built to use as clients see fit, rather than some set of tools that they must force themselves to conform to or worse blindly process without local benefit. That is our specialty. We are very good at it. We are confident that you will agree.
